This is a first of its kind field guide to the mosses of Missouri with species ranging from the magnificently robust to the impressively minute; from the most common to those of conservation concern.
“This is an attractive and accessible manual that synthesizes decades of research on the state’s bryoflora, covering nearly half of the 328 documented species in Missouri, a state at the crossroads of species distribution boundaries in North America.” —John J. Atwood, Curator of the Crosby Bryophyte Herbarium, Missouri Botanical Gardens
“The gateway to learning mosses in the field has arrived! Through outstanding descriptions, keys, and illustrations, Lorie Hetrick-Volenberg has created a portal to the unexplored green world of mosses we have needed for so long.” —Justin Thomas, Director, Institute of Botanical Training
Lorie’s photographic field guide is supplemented with illustrations for both the dichotomous keys and botanical glossary, making identification easier for both amateurs and budding bryologists alike. Only a hand lens is needed to work through the keys, and quick keys are provided as an alternative method for identification. Family, genus, and species accounts are written to give both general and in-depth information to match each reader’s desire. Additional species found in Missouri but not keyed out in this guide are discussed in various sections, providing even more comprehensive information about the diversity of species found within this state.
Photographs for each species account provide a habitat view and size reference, along with various close-up pictures to showcase different characteristics that aid in identification. Illustrations, drawn by the author, include a life size drawing in the keys section, along with a leaf drawing for each species account.
